Great Ocean Rd. - Victoria

Katherine - Victoria River
contents.html

Road is virtually single lane bitumen with gravel edges. A 5km stretch of highway standard about 30km out indicates an upgrading program. Lightly wooded with scruffy trees, fairly flat with slight undulations. About 20km before Victoria River the country changes dramatically with steep hills and rocky escarpments with the road winding through. The road widens here to allow passing traffic. Very beautiful, photogenic landscape.

Victoria River - WA border

The first 50km through magnificent country, very scenic with cliffs and escarpments galore. The road improves slightly towards the border, but is less than two lanes wide, but with good gravel edges for passing. At the W.A. border there is a Dept. of Agriculture check point, where fruit, vegetables and honey must be surrendered. There is insufficient warning of this requirement prior to reaching this point.

WA border - Kununurra

The road is two lane bitumen with enough room for passing large trucks. The trunk road to Lake Argyle is similar. Very scenic section.

Good two lane bitumen with spectacular scenery in early stages.

 Kununurra - Turkey Creek

From the turn-off, the road is a generaous single lane of bitumen with good surface, but requires use of gravel edges for passing. About 60km from the turn-off the road widens out in sections to two lanes. From the turn-off to Turkey Creek the road is about 50/50 one lane - two lanes.

The scenery along this section is the most dramatic and beautiful of the whole
round Australia trip.
